Newcastle Overwhelmingly Passes Size Cap Blocking Wal-Mart

From WCSH6.com in Portland, Maine:

Almost everyone who attended Newcastle's town meeting Monday agreed to cap all new retail buildings at 35,000 square feet.

The size cap was designed to keep big businesses like Wal-Mart out of town. Wal-Mart had proposed building a 186,000 square foot store in nearby Damariscotta, but last week, voters there blocked the development with the same size cap Newcastle voted on.

The turnout for Newcastle's town meeting was well into the hundreds, much higher than normal. Only a handful of people voted against the cap.

The town of Nobleboro also voted recently to place a 6-month moratorium on all new retail buildings that are bigger than 35,000 square feet.
