Walmart's Growth

wmgrowth.jpg
This is, and forgive the pun, the latest viral video about Walmart floating around the web these days. You may have seen it before, it's been around for quite some time, but this version is updated to include 2007 stores as well. In short, it shows a map of the US with green blips for every new Walmart store built from 1962 to 2007. It is a pretty incredible video, so go watch it.

My goodness it makes my head hurt to hear this argument over and over again! It is not the fault of the unions that companies shipped jobs overseas, it is the fault of greedy corporations which only care about making money for their shareholders and care nothing about how their decisions impact communities. The unions merely aimed to insure that their members, indeed all American workers, earned a living wage, a pension, and were provided with quality health care. Do you know what the minimum wage is in China? In Shengzen, the city in the country with the highest minimum wage, they earn $1,757.88 a year! Do you want American wages to be that low so we can compete with China on cost? The idea is simply ludicrous!
