Take Action: Tell the FEC to investigate Wal-Mart

As many of you likely know already, the Wall Street Journal published a front page article last week which revealed that Wal-Mart has been intimidating its workers into voting against Democrats in the upcoming election. WakeUpWalMart.com strongly condemned Wal-Mart's behavior as coercive and immoral but many observers have also questioned whether Wal-Mart's behavior was illegal. In response, American Rights at Work, a non-profit which seeks to protect and advance workers' rights, has just launched a petition calling on the FEC to investigate Wal-Mart's meetings with its workers, in which Wal-Mart warned them not to vote for Democrats. If Wal-Mart has committed a crime, they must be brought to justice. Please click on the frowny face to the right to demand that the FEC investigate Wal-Mart's shady, abusive business practices!

This is why WalMart and its employees should be very concerned about the dems taking over government. Essentially, it is the plan of the liberals to take over big corporations.

Don't believe me? Listen to Maxine Waters, Dem from California, talking about taking over corporations. The truth is out. Thanks Maxine for telling the truth about liberal socialist democrats.

These meetings are being used to educate employees about pending legislation that would likely be pushed if Democrats control the Executive and the Legislative branches after the election. Isn't that kind of effort to educate very similar to having a website that endevours educate people about the shortcomings of Walmart? Isn' t it hypocritical and self serving of this site to try to persecute Walmart for simply trying to get their side of the story out to it's employees. I would submit that if Walmart did not do this they would be doing a disservice to their stockholders, their employees and anyone who shop there. It's called strategic planning.

Union Member,

In regards to your assertion that "it is the plan of the liberals to take over big corporations" I would like to direct you to a passage from Barack Obama's speech on the economy, which he gave on September 17th of last year in New York:

"I believe that America’s free market has been the engine of America’s great progress. It’s created a prosperity that is the envy of the world. It’s led to a standard of living unmatched in history. And it has provided great rewards to the innovators and risk-takers who have made America a beacon for science, and technology, and discovery"

Incidentally, this also happens to be on the top of the front page of the economy section of his website, which you can check out right here:
http://www.barackobama.com/issues/economy/

Furthermore, if you go to http://www.opensecrets.org/ and look up Obama's top campaign contributors you'll find that 4 of his top 5 sources of campaign cash are large corporations (more accurately, people who work for them): Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase, Citigroup, and UBS AG.

I believe there are only three possible explanations for this bizarre contradiction: 1) Barack Obama is lying to us and he's a closet socialist 2) America's most powerful corporations secretly harbor large numbers of highly paid professionals who yearn for proletarian revolution or 3) Barack Obama and the Democrats are not actually socialists and you're taking one statement by one of the most liberal members of the democratic party completely out of context and inferring that said statement accurately reflects the economic philosophy of the democratic party.

Can you guess which one I think is true?

Wal-Mart is intimidating its workers into voting against the Democrats this fall. Their behavior may have been illegal and it was certainly immoral. That such behavior does not disgust you and that you would rather change the subject than talk about it is to me, simply shocking.

Speeking of changing the subject. Do you people realize that Walmart, as well as Mattel, and the American public, are victims of China. I've been calling for a boycot of the Olympics in China since November. Does anyone care about their Children? We need to send a message to the world that they can't attack us without concequences. Say NO to Chinese products tainted with lead.

I find it ironic that the Unions criticize Walmart for educating its managers, but the unions FORCE members to pay dues to a PAC, and the unions tell members how to vote. And the unions want to take away the right of members to vote by secret ballot. Talk about intimidation.

Democrats are more like fascists than true socialists. They want the government to control private businesses (e.g., how much profit a business can earn, what a business can produce, who a business can sell to), and the people to serve the government. That's why they promise an entitlement society.

Hope For The Future:
First I would like to say It is good to see you on here. I have missed you answering my comments. I really enjoy our dialogue.
Second I would like to make a comment on a small part of your comment to; Union Member: 3) Barack Obama and the Democrats are not actually socialists and you're taking one statement by one of the most liberal members of the democratic party completely out of context and inferring that said statement accurately reflects the economic philosophy of the democratic party.
Hope, I would like you to do something for me. Look at the Democratic platform, not what the candidates are saying, the actual platform they run under. Take the Democratic platform and compare it to the Communist Declaration. If you put them side by side you will see uncanny resemblances. If you actually do this you will see without a doubt that their whole platform has been written after the Communist Constitution. I have done this and it is very prevalent...

Mike,

It's good to hear from you again as well.

Let's have a look at the 2004 Democratic Party platform and compare it with the platform of the American Socialist Party, as I'm unfamiliar with any formal declaration or constitution put forward by the international communist movement (if one could even say that it still existed).

I'll begin with Foreign Policy and more specifically, the War on Terror, a big issue for both the Democratic and Republican parties. On the War on Terror, the Democrats declared:

"Victory in the war on terror requires a combination of American determination and international
cooperation on all fronts. It requires the ability and willingness to direct immediate, effective military
action when the capture or destruction of terrorist groups and their leaders is possible; a massive
improvement in intelligence gathering and analysis coupled with vigorous law enforcement; a relentless effort to shut down the flow of terrorist funds; a global effort to prevent failed or failing states that can become sanctuaries for terrorists; a sustained effort to deny terrorists any more recruits by conducting effective public diplomacy; and a sustained political and economic effort to improve education, work for peace, support democracy and extend hope."

In contrast, this is the official Socialist party position on the War on Terror:

"We stand in total opposition to U.S. imperialism and the current “war on terror” which is just another subterfuge for U.S. imperialism"

In addition, they support "the closing of all U.S. military facilities at home and abroad that train foreign military and paramilitary personnel", "unconditional disarmament by the United States", and "the abolition of the Central Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency, and all other institutions of covert warfare".

I could be mistaken, but I certainly don't see these positions as being identical. It appears to me that the Democrats believe U.S. military, intelligence, and economic power can be used for good and to fight terrorism while the socialists regard all of the above as a threat to humanity.

Let's have a look at economic policy then, which is more directly relevant to the issue of Wal-Mart.

Here are some excerpts from the "A STRONG, GROWING ECONOMY" section of the Democratic Party platform:

"We believe the private sector, not government, is the engine of economic growth and job creation.
Government's responsibility is to create an environment that will promote private sector investment, foster vigorous competition, and strengthen the foundations of an innovative economy."

"Free markets and honest competition. Economic growth and job creation depend on free markets
and competition, but competition and free markets depend on trust, transparency, and integrity. We are committed to requiring honesty in corporate accounting effective corporate governance, a fair shake for small investors and worker pension funds, a level playing field and competitive bidding practices for those who wish to transact business with the government, and vigorous prosecution of criminal conduct in executive suites."

In contrast, let's see what the Socialists say about the economy:

"The Socialist Party stands for a fundamental transformation of the economy, focusing on production for need not profit. So-called fair trade is meaningless as long as the world economy is dominated by a few massive corporations. Only a global transformation from capitalism to democratic socialism will provide the conditions for international peace, justice, and economic cooperation based on the large-scale transfer of resources and technology from the developed to the developing countries"

"We call for compensation to communities-- and compensation, re-training, and other support service for workers-- affected by plant and military base closings as stop-gap measures until we reach our goal of creating a socialist society totally separate from the global capitalist economy"

In other words, while Democrats support capitalism and firmly believe in the merits of free enterprise and free trade, socialists seek the overthrow of the capitalist system and believe anything short of state ownership/communal ownership is not acceptable.

This is not to say that I am either a Democrat or a Socialist or that I believe the aims of Wake Up Wal-Mart are socialist ( I certainly don't and I think this campaign is very consistent with American values and the free enterprise system), but I do believe that your assertion that Democrats and Socialists have identical beliefs is false.
