IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 2, 2008NEW AD HIGHLIGHTS WAL-MART’S GENDER DISCRIMINATION LEGAL TROUBLES, MCCAIN’S OPPOSITION TO FAIR PAY
WAKEUPWALMART.COM ASKS WAL-MART MOMS TO TELL JOHN MCCAIN “WE CAN’T AFFORD IT ANY LONGER”
Washington, DC - WakeUpWalMart.com, America's campaign to change Wal-Mart with more than 433,000 members nationally, today launches a hard-hitting 30-second TV ad -- “Breadwinners” -- that shows John McCain siding with corporations like Wal-Mart and its lobbyists in opposing equal pay. The ad ends with a plea for consumers to tell John McCain, “we can’t afford it any longer.” (Full script below.)
The ad comes on the same day that Sen. Joe Biden and Gov. Sarah Palin will square off in the only Vice Presidential debate. While Sarah Palin is the first female to run for Vice President on a Republican ticket her running mate, Sen. John McCain, opposes paying women the same wage as men doing the same job.
As Palin’s presence on the GOP’s ticket highlights issues like fair pay, Wal-Mart is in the midst of the largest discrimination class action lawsuit in history. One point six million (1.6 million) women have sued Wal-Mart because of their unfair discrimination in pay and promotional opportunities. When McCain had the opportunity to stand against gender discrimination, he instead sided with corporate lobbyists and Wal-Mart in opposing fair pay legislation.
The ad will begin airing nationwide today in nine states: Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, and in the District of Columbia. It can be viewed at http://www.wakeupwalmart.com/video/breadwinners.
TV AD SCRIPT
They put in the same long hours as men, but take home less.
Mothers, daughters, breadwinners.
One point six million women are standing up to pay discrimination at Wal-Mart alone.
But when fair pay legislation came to the Senate, John McCain helped defeat it.
He sided with corporate lobbyists, against equal pay.
Tell John McCain we can’t afford it any longer.###

The women in McCains staff make more than the men on average. He also has more women in key positions than Obama. Obama pays $.78 to the dollar to the women in his staff.

JR, where are you getting your information? I believe I've heard the $.78 cent number before...for the average ALL women in the UNITED STATES make compared to men. Are you just making this up? Please provide some sources.

It breaks down all the data.
McCain is not against higher pay for women, he is against another affirmative action program. I would hate to be told by my boss that I cannot get a raise because he would then have to raise the salary of the women in the department, even if their performance does not warrant it.

Well first, that's a biased right wing new source. Of course they've got good things to say about McCain. However, this data doesn't prove anything. I work in DC, and several of my close friends work on the hill. McCain has been in the Senate far longer than Obama, which means his staff has been around longer, thus they are making more money overall. It also depends what positions the women on his staff happen to be in. If, for instance, several of the women on Obama's staff are Staff Assistants, schedulers, and Legislative Corespondents, the average would be much lower than if there were several higher paid women in, say, press assistant and Chief of Staff roles.
The fact still remains that when John McCain had the change to vote for fair pay legislation, he did not, He voted against it. You can say it's because he wanted fewer law suits, but when a woman is being paid less for the same job, what is her recourse? That's, right, suing. So McCain is against women being paid the same as men for the same job. Shame on him.
