Walmart Lays Off More Than 11,000 Sam's Club Employees

It's been a rough few weeks for Sam's Club employees. First came the announcement that ten Sam's Club stores would close and the 1,500 employees who worked there could lose their jobs. Then, yesterday, Walmart announced they would be laying off 11,200 workers. Most of those being laid off demonstrate products in the stores. Walmart's spokesperson made it clear that this wasn't about the economy, or the employees performance, rather, they were outsourcing the jobs to Shopper Events a company who's only purpose is to demonstrate products in Walmart stores.

Walmart has suggested that the 10,000 employees they are firing can apply for a job with Shopper Events, who will be hiring roughly 10,000 employees to fill the gap left by the lay off. It sure sounds a lot like Walmart is asking 10,000 of their employees to reapply for their own jobs.

Layoffs Raise Important Questions About Commitment to its Workforce

(Washington, DC) – The following is a statement from Wake Up Walmart:

Walmart launched another assault on living and working standards in communities across the country yesterday, by laying off more than ten thousand Sam’s Club employees. The company is outsourcing jobs, many of them part-time, to a company based in Arkansas.

Workers report that Walmart called them into mass meetings where they were offered boxes of tissues and told they were no longer needed by the nation’s largest private employer.

The mass layoffs raise serious questions such as whether or not older and more senior workers were targeted for lay off. Why hasn’t Walmart made a clearer path to employment with Shopper Events for these 11,000 associates – which they clearly have the power to do? And for workers hired by the outsourced company, what kind of jobs will Shoppers Events provide to the new applicants? Why is Walmart telling workers they must agree not to pursue age discrimination claims in order to qualify for severance pay?

If those laid off employees were smart, they would apply for a job at Shopper Events.

...and, I agree with the Jekyll and Hyde comment. Taylor complains when Walmart builds a new store and complains when they close a store. She complains when Walmart gives someone a job (because it is substandard) then complains when Walmart removes jobs because they were so vital to the community.

That's why it's hard to take these blogs at face value. It's as if Taylor and her WUWM friends troll for Walmart news and then brainstorm ideas on how they could spin it to make Walmart look bad. Nevermind the contradictions, proof, and facts... as long as someone out there becomes outraged at something Walmart did, Taylor's work is done!

I think the biggest concern here is that 11,000 people were fired. 11,000 people that were left without income. When Walmart is one of tee only companies making big profits, why is it that they're laying people off? smells of greed to me!

I guess the press release about Sam's letting go of approx. 11,000 employees resulted has started to impact their customers. I experience the unfriendly-negative service today.I have been a member since 6/2000 and of course my picture on my Sam's Card has poor quality, So it is almost 10yrs... I am entitle to look different than 2000. The cashier said "the picture on the card don't look like me" and asked for me ID, which I don't have, as a result she threaten to take my ID card away. She said it was to "Protect" me... what the heck? I have things in my cart, I was going to pay for it...and how she going to protect me by taking my card away? I told her, to give my card back.... and I will go on my merry way to BJs, which I am also a member to... she refused and called her manager over.... here I am in line and now "irate" ppls are waiting to cash out...all I wanted to do was get my card back, hopefully come later with my ID card... that is if I was going return... I would rather go to bjs... I stopped by Sam's because it was on my home... Mind you, I have gone into this particular sam's several many times, never was a drama like today... So I have decided that I was going to Customer Service and share my experiences with this Sam's club... the rep who answered my... was no different than the cashier....I was not able to get anywhere...I am so frustrated with Sam's base on this one particular incident... and Yes I am not going back...

I have nothing positive to say about Sams Club or WalMart. I have been an Employee there for 5 yrs and I thank God this is my fun money job. My GM Andy Lowe is the biggest D bag in the world. He sucks as a manager and a human being! When I first started working there we would have company picnics and "Holiday" parties and an Annual Bonus. Because of all the greed form the people at the top we dont get crap anymore. The worker gets diddly for working their butts off and the VP's and CEO's get millions for doing Jack! Wake up Bentonville and change your ways!

1. In March 2008 I was terminated from Wal-Mart Store #2615 as Sporting Goods Department Manager for ‘INABILITY TO PERFORM JOB.” Although Wal-Mart Managers never entered me (George Boston Rhynes) into Wal-Mart Four Week Training Program as required for all Sporting Goods Department Managers nationwide.

2. Even after repeated request to Assistant Manager Frank, Manager Shannon, Manager Trina, Co-Manager Andy and others to no avail. Moreover this training was required to be given, dated, verified, and filed in workers personnel file. I have sent thirteen letters to Wal-Mart President and Board of Directors requesting answers to the following questions. However they have refused to answer the following VALID questions concerning my WRONGFUL termination: (SEE BELOW)

a. What date was I entered into the required WAL-MART FOUR-WEEK TRAINING PROGRAM?

b. Why terminate a Department Manager for INABILITY to perform job after repeated request to be trained as set forth in WAL-MART own policy?

c. What was the name of my Assigned Trainer? Why can’t Wal-Mart produce proof of my training along with my acknowledgement, initials, and signature that I was ever entered into this training or that I failed in such training?

d. Why did Wal-Mart setup a TRAINING PROGRAM and then fail to make it available to all Sporting Goods Department Managers? Was it because of incompetent managers employed at WAL-MART Store #2615 receiving over $65,000 a year?

e. Is it WAL-MART unwritten policy to treat American Workers as those in China or in some other Third World nation? Does WAL-MART respect WORKERS rights in Georgia, which is an “At Will To Work State” wherein workers can be TERMINATED for GOOD CAUSE, BAD CAUSE, OR FOR NO CAUSE AT ALL?

f. Is it Wal-Mart policy NOT to answer workers valid questions?

g. Is WAL-MART under the impression that they can WRONGFULLY terminate Retired Military Veterans of the Vietnam Era because these veterans refuses to stand up for WORKERS right after serving their country in foreign LANDS?

h. Does WAL-MART Executives believe that American Shoppers will continue spending their money at WAL-MART Stores after seeing their fellow workers, friends and family members wrongfully terminated without any recourse at store #2615 and #899? God Bless all American Workers. (Galatians 6:7).
