Walmart just announced, with much patting of their own back, that more of their employees are enrolled in their company health insurance this year. The total number of their own workers enrolled in their insurance? It is up to 54% from 52% last year. The industry standard, by the way, is 65% and many big retailers insure a much larger percentage of their workforce. Costco, for example insures 85% of its workers.
But the real news in Walmart's announcement is that more employees are uninsured and more employees are relying on state aid. The AP reports:
The number of Wal-Mart employees with health coverage — provided by either Wal-Mart or another source — dropped from 94 percent last year to 87 percent.Wal-Mart said 43,000 of its workers receive health coverage through a state assistance program, up from 36,000 last year.
So not only does Walmart fail to insure 644,000 of its workers, a whopping 182,000 are left completely uninsured while another 43,000 (that Walmart admits to) must rely on Medicaid and other state run programs.
David Tovar, Walmart's spokesperson said, "We believe this is just one more indicator that our nation's current health care system is not sustainable." But the comment fails to understand that Walmart is a part of the problem with our nation's current health care system. Employers have to take some of the responsibility for providing health insurance and they fail to take any.

Wal-Mart spokesman David Tovar said the company is just starting to examine the numbers to try to find more specific causes for the changes. The recession is likely the general reason for the changes, but Tovar said the numbers point to a bigger problem.
"We believe this is just one more indicator that our nation's current health care system is not sustainable," Tovar said."
I guess when something doesn't fit into your Walmart is evil paradigm, you just ignore it.

Is Walmart supposed to force their employees to take company offered insurance? Perhaps, we should be glad the employees, who opt to allow the government to do everything for them, are at least working at all? Wallmart is not the most disirable employer, but in this case, the employee may be at least as guilty.

So, is Walmart in trouble or is MediaWhiz's Jonathan Shapiro right when he claims that Walmart is stronger than ever? Seems like they could afford a more comprehensive health care program. What's the current program for the ones that are insured? Could they maybe reduce some of the benefits so that everyone could at least have basic coverage?

Proposition 72 was placed on the ballet in 2004 and requires California employers with 20 or more employees to pay 80 percent of health coverage for workers or pay into a newly created government-run health system. Employers with 200 or more employees also must pay for dependent coverage.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. contributed $500,000 to try to defeat a California ballot measure that would require large and mid-size employers to help pay for health insurance for their workers.
California pays $32 million a year for health services for Wal-Mart employees who lack adequate health insurance "Wal-Mart believes employers should provide quality health care coverage to their employees, and we do," Lin said. "We offer a wide choice of affordable health care options to both full- and part-time employees in California and across the country."
But Robert Holober, executive director of the Consumer Federation of California, said Bentonville, Arkansas-based Wal-Mart "denies coverage to half its employees through outright disqualification or by requiring premium co-payments that are out of reach for its poverty wage employees."

its not that u cant get insurance from walmart.. its just that u cant afford it.. low premiums come with very high deductables so its hard for people to use the insurance.. low deductables come with HIGH premiums and most cant afford to take that much out of their check.
